How dental implants improve your smile

A missing tooth changes more than your smile. Implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth, restoring how you eat, speak and look while protecting the bone underneath.

Losing a tooth, whether to decay, gum disease or a sports knock, affects far more than how your smile looks in photos. It can change how you chew, how you sound and, over time, the shape of your face. A dental implant is the option that comes closest to giving you a natural tooth back, and it does something the alternatives cannot: it keeps your jawbone working.

What a dental implant actually is

An implant has three parts. A small titanium post is placed into the jaw, where it fuses with the bone over a few months and acts as an artificial root. A connector sits on top of it, and a custom crown is fitted over that connector to match your other teeth in shape and colour. The result is a single, stable tooth that looks and feels like the one you lost.

How implants restore your smile

Function you can rely on

Because an implant is anchored in bone, you can bite into an apple or chew a steak without it shifting. There is no slipping, no clicking and no taking anything out at night. For many patients, that confidence at the dinner table is the biggest change.

A natural appearance

The crown is made to match the size, shape and shade of your surrounding teeth, so it blends in. An implant also fills the gap that would otherwise let neighbouring teeth drift, which keeps your whole smile aligned.

Protecting your jawbone

This is the quiet benefit most people do not know about. When a tooth is lost, the bone that used to support it begins to shrink, the same way a muscle weakens when it is not used. That bone loss can make the lower face look sunken over the years. An implant stimulates the bone as you chew, helping preserve it and the structure of your face.

What to expect from the process

Getting an implant happens over a few stages rather than a single visit, and most of the in-between time is simply healing. It starts with a consultation and a digital scan so we can check that you have enough healthy bone and plan the exact position. The post is then placed during a procedure done under local anaesthetic, so the appointment itself is more comfortable than most people expect.

From there the implant is left to fuse with the bone, usually over a few months. That waiting period is what gives an implant its strength, and you carry on with daily life in the meantime, often with a temporary tooth in place. Once it has fused, we attach the connector and fit your custom crown. We will give you a clear timeline at the start so there are no surprises along the way.

Implants compared to dentures and bridges

Implants versus dentures

Removable dentures are less expensive up front and can replace many teeth at once, but they sit on the gums rather than in the bone. They can slip, need adhesive, and do nothing to stop bone loss. Implants stay put and feel like part of you. In some cases we can even use a small number of implants to anchor a full denture for far more stability.

Implants versus bridges

A traditional bridge fills a gap by attaching to the two teeth beside it, which means grinding down those healthy teeth to hold the crowns. An implant stands on its own and leaves the neighbours untouched. It usually lasts longer too. If a tooth needs to come out first, our tooth extraction team can plan the removal with a future implant in mind.

Is an implant right for you?

Most healthy adults with enough jawbone are good candidates, and a digital scan tells us quickly. We will look at your gums, your bone and your overall health, then walk you through the options honestly. You can read the full process on our dental implants page, and if you have not visited us before, the new patient page explains what to expect.

How long do dental implants last?

With good home care and regular check-ups, dental implants can last for decades, often a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacing after many years of use, but the implant itself is built to stay.

Is getting a dental implant painful?

The procedure is done with local anaesthetic so you should not feel pain during it. Most patients describe the recovery as milder than they expected, usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief for a day or two.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Many adults are good candidates. We check your gum health and jawbone with a digital scan, review your overall health, and tell you honestly whether an implant, bridge or other option suits you best.

How do I care for a dental implant?

You care for an implant much like a natural tooth: brush twice a day, clean around it daily and keep your regular check-ups so we can monitor the gums and bone supporting it.
