Cleanings & Check-ups

Dental cleaning and check-ups in Hamilton

Regular cleanings and exams at our Limeridge Road West clinic keep small problems small and your smile healthy. Gentle hygiene care for the whole family on Hamilton Mountain.

Why regular cleanings and exams matter

Most serious dental problems start small and silent. A bit of plaque hardens into tartar, a tiny cavity forms between two teeth, gums begin to bleed when you brush. None of it hurts at first, which is exactly why it is so easy to ignore. Regular cleanings and check-ups exist to catch those early changes while they are still quick and painless to fix.

A clean mouth is also a healthier one overall. Gum inflammation has been linked to wider health concerns, and keeping your gums and teeth in good shape supports the rest of your body too. For most Hamilton families, a visit every six months is the simplest way to protect your teeth and avoid the bigger, more involved treatment that comes from waiting until something aches.

What happens at a check-up

A visit with us is thorough but unhurried. Here is what a typical appointment covers.

Examination

The dentist checks each tooth, your gums, your bite and any existing fillings or crowns, looking for decay, cracks or early signs of trouble.

Digital x-rays

When they are due, low-dose digital x-rays reveal decay between teeth and the health of the bone, things the eye simply cannot see.

Scaling and polishing

Your hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar from above and below the gumline, then polishes away surface stains for a smooth, fresh finish.

Oral cancer screening

We check the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue and throat. Catching anything unusual early gives the best possible outcome.

Our hygienists, Teneeka and Zaid, lead the cleaning side of your visit and are happy to show you techniques that actually fit your day, whether that is a better flossing method or the right brush for sensitive gums. You can meet the full team here.

How often should you come in?

For most people, a cleaning and exam every six months keeps things on track. If you are prone to tartar, have a history of gum disease, smoke, or wear braces, your hygienist may recommend coming in every three or four months instead. Children often benefit from regular visits too, partly for care and partly to build a calm, lifelong habit. We set the right interval with you rather than applying a one-size schedule.

Gum health

Healthy gums are firm, pale pink and do not bleed when you brush or floss. Bleeding, swelling or persistent bad breath can be early signs of gingivitis, the reversible first stage of gum disease. Caught early, it usually clears up with a professional cleaning and better home care. Left alone, it can progress to periodontitis, which damages the bone that holds your teeth in place. Your regular check-up is where we measure your gum health and step in early if something is changing.

Small habits make a big difference

Brushing twice a day, cleaning between your teeth daily, and limiting sugary snacks and drinks prevents most cavities and gum problems. For practical pointers, see our blog post on dental hygiene tips for healthy, white teeth.

After your cleaning, and tooth sensitivity

Most people walk out of a cleaning feeling fresh and ready to get on with their day. If it has been a long while since your last visit, or your gums were inflamed, you might notice a little tenderness or sensitivity for a day or two. That settles quickly. Rinsing with warm salt water, brushing gently with a soft brush and easing off very hot or cold foods for a short while all help. If sensitivity lingers, tell us, because it can point to a worn area or a small cavity worth a closer look.

We also use your appointment to look at the bigger picture. If we spot a chipped filling, a cracked tooth or early decay, we will explain what we see, show you on the x-ray or photo where possible, and lay out your options without pressure. You decide what happens next, and nothing gets booked that you have not agreed to. That honest, plain-language approach is something Hamilton Mountain families tell us they value most.

Cleanings for kids

Children's cleanings are gentle, quick and positive. We keep the language simple, explain what each instrument does before we use it, and add plenty of encouragement. The aim is for kids to leave feeling proud of their clean teeth rather than nervous about the next visit. Cleanings also let us spot early decay and keep an eye on how adult teeth are coming in. Cleanings sit at the heart of our family dentistry, so the whole household can be seen in one trip.

Insurance and the CDCP

Cleanings and exams are among the most commonly covered services on workplace dental plans and the Canadian Dental Care Plan. We offer direct billing and handle the claim for you. Our front desk checks and explains your dental insurance before your appointment, so there are no surprises. If you would like to understand your coverage, just ask when you book.

Keeping up with regular cleanings is also the best foundation for any cosmetic work later on. A healthy, clean mouth is the starting point for treatments like cosmetic dentistry and whitening. To understand why these visits are worth prioritising, our article on why a regular dental check-up is important goes into more detail. Cleaning and check-up questions

Have another question? Call (905) 383-7979 or see our full FAQ.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Most patients do well with a cleaning and check-up every six months. If you have gum disease, build tartar quickly or wear braces, your hygienist may suggest every three or four months. We set the right interval at your exam.

Does a dental cleaning hurt?

A routine cleaning is usually comfortable. You may notice some pressure or mild sensitivity, especially if it has been a while or your gums are inflamed. Let your hygienist know if anything is tender and we will adjust.

Are dental x-rays safe?

Yes. We use digital x-rays, which use a very low dose of radiation, and only take them when they are due or there is a clear reason. They let us see decay between teeth and bone levels that the visual exam misses.

What is included in a check-up?

A full exam of your teeth, gums and bite, digital x-rays when due, scaling to remove plaque and tartar, polishing, and an oral cancer screening. We finish by explaining what we found and any next steps.

Is a cleaning covered by insurance or the CDCP?

Cleanings and exams are among the most commonly covered services on dental plans and the Canadian Dental Care Plan. We offer direct billing and review your coverage before your visit.
