What a dental implant actually is

An implant is a small titanium post that takes the place of a missing tooth root. We place it in your jawbone, where it gradually bonds with the bone over a few months. Once it is solid, we attach a custom crown on top that is shaped and colour-matched to blend with your other teeth. The result sits in your mouth like a real tooth, with nothing to take out at night.

Because the post is anchored in bone, an implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support the way a bridge does. It also keeps the jawbone stimulated, which helps you avoid the sunken look that can follow long-term tooth loss. For many Hamilton patients, that combination of stability and a natural appearance is what makes implants worth it.

The implants we place

Tooth loss looks different for everyone, so the implant plan does too. During your consultation we look at how many teeth are missing, the health of your gums and the amount of bone you have, then recommend one of three approaches.

Single tooth implant

One implant and one crown to replace a single missing tooth, without touching the healthy teeth on either side.

Multiple teeth

Two or more implants supporting a fixed bridge to replace several teeth in a row, restoring your bite where you chew most.

Implant-supported dentures

A few implants anchor a full denture so it clicks into place and stops slipping when you eat or talk.

The step-by-step process

Implants take place over several appointments with healing time in between. Here is how a typical case runs at our Limeridge Road West clinic.

Consultation and planning

We examine your mouth, take digital x-rays and a scan, and check the bone where the implant will go. Then we walk you through your options and the timeline before anything starts.

Implant placement

Using local anaesthetic, we gently place the titanium post into the jaw. The appointment is usually shorter than people expect, and you head home the same day with simple aftercare instructions.

Healing and bonding

Over the next few months the bone grows around the implant and locks it in place. We may fit a temporary tooth so you are never left with a visible gap while you heal.

Crown and final fit

Once the implant is solid, we attach the custom crown, bridge or denture, check your bite and polish everything so your new tooth looks and feels right.

Are you a good candidate?

Most adults with a missing tooth and healthy gums are candidates for implants. The main things we check are whether your gums are free of active infection and whether you have enough jawbone to hold the post. If the bone has thinned after a tooth was lost some time ago, a small graft can rebuild it first.

Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and grinding can affect healing, so we talk those through honestly during your visit. If an implant is not the right fit for you, we will say so and suggest another way forward. Sometimes that path begins with a gentle extraction of a failing tooth before we plan the replacement.

Implants compared with bridges and dentures

A bridge is faster and can be a good choice in some situations, but it relies on filing down the teeth on either side of the gap. A removable denture is the simplest option, yet it can move while you eat and needs taking out to clean. Implants take longer, but they stand on their own, protect the jawbone and tend to last the longest. We lay out all three honestly so you can pick what suits your mouth.

Want to see the difference an implant makes?

Our blog post on how dental implants improve your smile explains the everyday benefits, from chewing comfortably again to feeling confident in photos. If you are weighing your options, it is a helpful read before your consultation.

Caring for your implant

Implants are low maintenance, but they are not maintenance free. Brush twice a day, floss around the implant the way you would a natural tooth, and keep up your regular cleanings and check-ups. Healthy gums are what keep an implant stable for the long run, so those visits matter. With that simple routine, the post can last for decades, and many patients keep theirs for life.

Insurance and the CDCP

We bill most insurance plans directly, accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan for eligible services, and check and explain your coverage with you before treatment so there are no surprises and you know what your plan includes.

How long does the dental implant process take in Hamilton?

Most implant treatments run from about three to six months from placement to the final crown. The implant needs time to fuse with your jawbone before the new tooth is attached. Some cases move faster and others take longer, depending on healing and whether a bone graft is needed.

Are dental implants painful?

The procedure is done with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during placement. Most patients compare the recovery to having a tooth removed and manage it well with over-the-counter pain relief and a few quiet days. We give you clear aftercare instructions and check in on your healing.

Do dental implants last a lifetime?

The implant post itself can last for decades and often a lifetime with good care. The crown on top may need replacing after many years of use. Daily brushing, flossing around the implant and regular cleanings at our Hamilton Mountain clinic give your implant the best chance of lasting.

Does CDCP or insurance cover dental implants?

Coverage for implants varies. Some private insurance plans cover part of the treatment, and the Canadian Dental Care Plan covers specific eligible services. We check and explain your coverage before treatment and offer direct billing so you know what your plan includes up front.

Can I get implants if I have worn dentures for years?

Often yes. Implant-supported dentures use a few implants to anchor a denture so it stops slipping. After years without teeth, some bone may have shrunk, so we take a scan and x-rays to check your jaw and tell you whether a graft is needed first.
