It is easy to put the dentist off. You feel fine, nothing hurts, and life on the Mountain stays busy. The catch is that the most serious dental problems rarely announce themselves with pain until they are well advanced. A regular check-up is how we find those problems while they are still small, quiet and simple to treat.
Small problems stay small when you catch them early
A cavity that is the size of a pinhead today can be filled in a few minutes. Left alone for a year or two, that same cavity can reach the nerve and turn into a root canal or an extraction. The same pattern holds for gum disease, cracked fillings and worn enamel. None of these hurt at the start, which is exactly why a six-month exam matters.
Coming in twice a year also means we get to know your mouth. When we see you regularly, we can spot the difference between a spot that has always looked that way and a change that needs attention. That history is one of the most useful tools we have.
What actually happens during a check-up
A visit at our Limeridge Road West office is calm and unhurried. Here is what your dentist and hygienist look at.
A full exam of every tooth
We check each tooth for decay, chips and cracks, and we inspect old fillings and crowns to make sure they are still sealed. We also look at how your teeth meet when you bite, since an uneven bite can wear teeth down over time.
Gum and bone health
Healthy gums are the foundation of healthy teeth. We measure the small spaces around each tooth and watch for bleeding, swelling and recession. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it responds very well to early care.
Digital x-rays when needed
Our digital x-rays use a low dose of radiation and let us see between teeth and below the gumline, where the eye cannot reach. They reveal hidden decay, bone loss and problems with the roots long before they become symptoms.
An oral cancer screening
During every exam we quickly check your tongue, cheeks, lips and the floor of your mouth for anything unusual. It takes a minute and it is one of the most important parts of the visit.
A professional cleaning
Even careful brushers build up hardened tartar that a toothbrush cannot remove. Our hygienists clear it away, polish your teeth and finish with practical tips for your daily routine at home. You can read more about what to expect on our teeth cleaning and check-ups page.
What your check-up protects you from later
It is easy to see a routine visit as something you could skip in a busy month. Your teeth usually tell a different story. A small filling caught early is quick and simple. The same problem left for a year or two can mean a root canal and a crown, or an extraction and replacing the tooth. Regular check-ups protect your teeth and keep you out of the chair for the big stuff, precisely because they catch trouble while it is still small.
There is a comfort side to this too. Catching things early means shorter, simpler appointments, which is a relief if dental visits make you anxious. We see a lot of nervous patients on the Mountain, and a steady rhythm of small, calm visits does far more for your peace of mind than long gaps followed by a crisis.
How often should you come in?
For most people, every six months works well. If you are prone to cavities, have gum disease, smoke, or are managing a condition like diabetes, we may suggest seeing you more often. Children benefit from regular visits too, which is part of our family dentistry care for every age under one roof.
It is never too late to restart
If it has been a few years since your last appointment, you are far from alone, and there is no judgement here. We meet you where you are, take the time to explain what we find, and build a plan that fits your comfort level. New to the clinic? Our new patient page walks you through your first visit step by step.
